Frequently Asked Questions
What do I wear when I come to Aldersgate?
Dress at Aldersgate varies a great deal. Many people, especially those who come to our 8:45 Contemporary service, wear casual clothes including slacks or skirts for women and dress pants and golf shirts for men. Those who attend the 11:00 service are often dressed similarly to those who come to the earlier service; however, it is not unusual to see ties and dresses as well at the 11:00 service. We want you to be at home at Aldersgate, so wear what makes you feel comfortable
Where do I go when I arrive?
Our 8:45 Contemporary service is located in our Christian Activity Center (CAC) on the back side of our property. Signs are posted directing you to the CAC, and greeters should be present at each entrance to help you. The easiest parking for the contemporary service is in the back parking lot behind the CAC.
Our 11:00 service is located in our Sanctuary, which is at the front of the campus. Visitors’ parking spots are reserved directly in front of the Sanctuary, and we encourage you to park there.
Can I participate in communion if I am not a member?
The United Methodist Church practices open communion. All baptized believers are welcome at the communion table.
How do United Methodist congregations receive communion?
United Methodist congregations vary greatly on the method of receiving communion.
The Sacrament of Holy Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of every month at Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
At our 8:45 Contemporary service, Communion is received by Intinction. Following the Consecration Prayers, ushers will direct the congregation to file toward the front of the worship space. A piece of bread will be given to you. Receive the bread, dip the bread into the cup, and consume the bread and the wine (grape juice) together. You may then choose to pray at the altar rail or return to your seat.
At our 11:00 Traditional service, Communion is served at the altar rail. Following the Consecration Prayers, ushers will direct the congregation to file toward the front of the Sanctuary. Communion is served in groups while worshippers kneel at the altar rail. Communion servers will pass the tray of wafers and the tray of communion cups. Take a piece of bread and a cup when they are brought to you. After all have been served, a pastor will dismiss those kneeling at the rail.
Am I going to be singled out as a visitor?
No. However, we would love the chance to meet and greet you, as well as welcome you to Aldersgate United Methodist Church. All worshippers (members and visitors) are asked to sign the pew registration pads. Also, first time visitors are asked to stop by the Welcome Center so that we might share with you a small gift.
Are your services contemporary or traditional?
Our 8:45 worship service in the Christian Activity Center (CAC) is our contemporary service. It is led by a praise band.
Our 11:00 worship service is a traditional worship service in our Sanctuary. Our choir and pastors wear robes, and music is mostly hymns.
