Aldersgate UMC Church and Society

 "What does the Lord require of you but to do justice,
and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?" (Micah 6:8b)

The United Methodist Church has a long history of social concern.  John Wesley was an advocate for human rights, healthcare, humane treatment of animals and labor justice.  The Methodists were also very vocal during the civil rights movement as well as women's right's movement.

In 1908, the first social principles were drafted.  The Social Principles are "a prayerful and thoughtful efort on the part of the General Conference to speak to the human issues in the contemporary world from a sound biblical and theoloigcal foundation as historically demonstrated in United Methodist traditions."  They encompass the following major categories:

  • Natural world
  • Nurturing world
  • Social Community
  • Economic community
  • Political Community
  • World community

We are Aldersgate UMC presently have three focus areas of Church and Society:

  1. Peace and Justice
    Hunger
    Poverty
  2. Environment
    Aldersgate Goes Green
  3. Education about Societal Issues
    World AIDS Day
    Earth Day
    Malaria Prevention
    Domestic Violence

The Church and Society Ministry is always looking for exciting new program ideas and individuals with a passion for social justice.

The Mission of the Church and Society Team is to "Live our faith and to seek justice by promoting awareness of social concerns, inspiring community involvement and encouraging political action."

The Purpose of the Team is to work, in accordance with the Book of Discipline, on issues of "peace and world order, human relations, political and economic affairs and health and general welfare."
