ECO-TIPS

Eco-Tip#1:
Did you know that Montgomery has a great recycling program?

What a long way your orange bag can go.  The items that can be recycled include newspaper, magazines, #1 and #2 plastics and aluminum cans.  Visit Montgomery's recycling webpage for more specifics about collection and to get more orange bags.

Eco-Tip #2:
Did you know that compact flourescent units (VFU's) contain small amounts of mercury?
These bulbs should not be discarded the same as incandescent bulbs.  Take them to Home Depot, who recently started a national recycling program.  While there, make sure to bring your used flourescent bulbs as well!

Eco-Tip #3:
Did you know that Friday and Saturday, Nov. 21 and 22, from 9:00am to 1:00pm, you can recycle your old computers, monitors, cpu's, fax machines, scanners, copiers, cell phones, etc.?
The event is free to the public; however, if you bring a TV a $10 charge will be assessed.  Location: Patterson Field. Call 334.241.2175 for more information.

Eco-Tip #4:
Did you know that in the United States alone, it is thought that over 170 million cell phones are replaced each year?  Out of those 170 million phones, less than 20% are recycled or refurbished.  If these cell phones are placed into the landfills, many toxins can be leached into the soil and can contaminate the groundwater.  The youth group is collecting cell phones to donate to the Family Sunshine Center.  Bring your old cell phones with you on Sunday to support the youth group and the Family Sunshine Center.

Eco-Tip #5:
Do you know what BPA is?
BPA or bisphenol-A is used to make polycarbonate plastic or items with #7 on the bottom.  BPA is known as an endocrine disrupter and in animal studies has been linked to obesity, infertility, cancer and early puberty.

Eco-Tip #6:
Did you know that 100 Billion plastic bags are used each year?
That's 330 per citizen.  Plastic bags are made from petroleum.  We use 12 million barrels of oil/year to make bags in the US alone.  Bring your own bag!
Click here for links to places to buy your own bags.

Eco-Tip #7:
Did you know that 14 million trees are cut down per year to make grocery bags? Bring your own bag!

Eco-Tip #8:
Did you know that the Montgomery Clean City Commission oversees all aspects of the Christmas tree recycling program? All old trees can be brough to the Saturday trash collection points.  The recycled trees are mulched or used for fish hatcheries in local lakes.  Visit
www.montgomeryal.gov/index.aspx?page=245 for more information.

Eco-Tip #9:
Did you know that each person gets almost 500 pieces of junk mail each year? That equals about 100 million trees.  44% of that junk mail is thrown in the trash without being opened or recycled.
Click here for links to organizations that will help cut back the amount of junk mail you get in 2009!
